The Legacy Award was presented by Susan Holden, chair of the Achieve Services volunteer board of directors, during a fundraiser for Achieve Services at Bunker Hills Golf Course, Coon Rapids.

Today, services for adults include employment, vocational training, occupational therapy, and life skills development. More than 20 businesses and organizations in the area have Achieve participants as part of their workforce.

SBA loan helps small business thrive
An SBA Certified Development Company  recently provided a loan to an independent insurance agency (State Farm) that illustrates the power of SBA financing. The $606,000 SBA loan allowed a State Farm insurance agent to go from renting slightly more than 1,000 square feet in an older building with no street frontage to purchasing a newer, 4,100-square-foot building with high-end finishes and great street exposure - all while reducing his total monthly cost of occupancy by $500! Furthermore, the borrower’s total equity injection for the transaction was just 5% of the loan amount, or $30,000. And, the transaction took just under 40 days from loan approval to closing.

The new property consists of 2,200 square feet of usable office space, which will accommodate future expansion. The new office is a little over three miles from his current shop, but is more central to his overall client base. And, in addition to all the benefits he’s currently enjoying, when he retires, he will have accumulated significant equity value in his new property.

The borrower would not have had the required 25% equity injection of $150,000 for a conventional loan or been able to manage a loan term shorter than twenty-five years. With the longer term SBA loan obtained through the work of the CDC, he was able to stop throwing money away on a monthly lease payment and follow a plan that will allow his growing business to thrive.

Sound like a ringing endorsement for an SBA loan? If so, CMDC can help chamber members capitalize on the opportunity today!

“In today’s economy, it’s more important than ever to take time and review your current insurance needs,” said Michael Thorsland  “By getting to know you and your situation, a good insurance agent can not only make sure that you are properly protected should something bad happen, but they can also make sure that you’re not paying more than you need to be.”

Senator Petersen and Representative Abeler Take a Stand for Veterans
The Minnesota Senate Higher Education committee heard a bill on Tues, April 2 authored by Senator Branden Petersen, R-Andover, and State Representative Jim Abeler, R-Anoka, that would make it easier for veterans to receive academic credit for their military training and experience.

Current law requires Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU), and encourages the University of Minnesota and private institutions, to recognize and award educational credits for courses that were part of a veteran’s military training or service. But as many veterans learn, actual credits awarded often fall short of their cumulative experience.

“Military service, and the training that comes with it, provide transferrable educational opportunities that should be accepted by our institutions of higher education,” Representative Abeler said. “We need to give credit where credit is due, and this bill provides the first step to giving veterans recognition for the content and value of their service.”

Representative Abeler was inspired to author the bill after talking with a veteran who, after multiple combat tours to Afghanistan and law enforcement courses, was awarded only one physical education credit upon entrance to a MnSCU institution.

In response, Abeler and Petersen authored Senate File 1467/House File 1597 in order to expand consideration to the academic skills developed in all aspects of military training or service, without being limited solely to physical fitness.

“Our veterans are forced with many challenges when they return home. One of the primary obstacles they face is gaining employment,” Senator Petersen explained. “This bill will allow them to take advantage of their hard work for our country, while saving money in educational expenses.”

The Minnesota Department of Military Affairs supports the bill, and former State Representative John Kriesel was present to testify in favor of the proposed legislation. Kriesel is a former staff sergeant in the Minnesota Army National Guard.

“This legislation will help Minnesota’s many veterans use their real-world military experience and training toward a college degree that will help them find quality, high paying jobs,” Kriesel said.

The bill was laid over for inclusion in a higher education omnibus bill to be drafted this spring.

Financial One Credit Union CEO Honored in Business Journal’s ‘40 under 40’ list
Financial One Credit Union’s CEO Previn Solberg has been named in the prestigious ‘40 under 40’ list by the Minneapolis-St.Paul Business journal for 2012. The 40 Under 40 recognizes local leaders under the age of 40 who have made significant contributions in their careers as well as their community. “Although I am honored and humbled to be recognized, our staff and board members have worked hard to not only improve Financial One, but to give back to the communities we serve”, said Solberg modestly.

In 2009, Financial One was on a tightrope when the credit union experienced three consecutive years of losses and the largest single loss in the company’s nearly eighty year history. Those losses caused its capital to drop below the regulatory “well-capitalized” level.  However, when Solberg was promoted as President in January 2010, he devised a plan of action with the credit union’s board members and staff. That plan revolved around community outreach and building strong relationships…real relationships based on trust, not profits.

Although to some industry experts, investing more time and money in the community seemed counter intuitive, especially when trying to recover from significant losses, Solberg believed it would work. “Every single one of our employees live here, our kids go to school here, we worship here. We are vested in our communities.  We believe that if we can improve our members’ well-being and help strengthen our communities, the credit union will also benefit.”  The employees embraced this philosophy and it is working.

In the three years since Solberg took the role as President and CEO, Financial One not only improved its financial outlook but also tripled the number of new accounts opened each month. Solberg believes that “if we take care of the people we serve and do what’s right by them, the finances will take care of themselves.”  And that has been the case. The financial success has enabled Financial One to give back tens of thousands of dollars to local non-profits, schools and community organizations.  In 2012 alone, the credit union has sponsored youth athletics, the arts, scholarships for Columbia Heights High School students, Free2B!, Anoka Ramsey Community College Foundation, DAV – Minnesota and Southern Anoka Community Assistance to name a few.

Being honored with the 40 Under 40 award was fitting for Solberg and Financial One Credit Union given the award’s focus on community involvement as well as business success. Financial One’s ability to make such significant strides while increasing the amount it gives back to the community is quite remarkable. It serves as an example of how everybody benefits when we change our focus to the needs of the community and not just profits.

Anoka County Wins National Transparency Award
The Anoka County website, www.anokacounty.us, has won a Sunny Award! The Sunny Award is presented by the Editors of Sunshine Review to honor the most transparent government websites in the nation. These outstanding websites have scored an “A+” transparency grade on Sunshine Review’s Transparency Checklist. This year, only 247 of the more than 7,000 government websites ranked by Sunshine Review earned a Sunny Award. Anoka County is the only county in Minnesota to receive the perfect A+ rating.

“We have worked hard to ensure that we are accountable to the taxpayers and transparent about how we use their tax dollars. Providing as much information as possible via our website helps us meet our mission to serve our citizens effectively and efficiently,” according to Anoka County Board Chair Rhonda Sivarajah.

The Sunshine Review uses a 10-point transparency checklist to evaluate the content of every state and local government website. Anoka County was lauded for posting a wide range of content to the county website including a detailed breakdown of the annual budget, audit reports, contact information for elected officials, meeting agendas and minutes, lobbying expenditures, and information about property taxes, permits and licenses, contract bids, and other public records.

“The Sunny Awards recognize governments that make transparency a priority. The winners of the Sunny Awards are cities, counties, and school districts that proactively share the public information that empowers citizens and keeps government accountable to the people,” said Michael Barnhart, President of Sunshine Review. “We would like to congratulate Anoka County for being a champion for transparency and serving as a leader to every state and local government around the nation.”

Youth Intervention Recognition Given to Local Business Manager

Mandy Meisner, Manager of Business Development for The ‘nMotion Dance Center in Fridley, was recently awarded the annual Friend of Youth Leadership Award for “Innovative Funding Leadership” from The Youth Intervention Programs Assn (YIPA).

Meisner was nominated by Lee Carlson Center™  for Mental Health & Well-Being, a local non-profit providing mental health services to youth and families in our community and a member/partner of YIPA.

According to Patty Halvorson, Marketing/Development Manager for Lee Carlson Center who works closely with Meisner, “Mandy really deserves this recognition.  She has done it all for us.  Everything from recruiting volunteers, to helping plan and raise money for various campaigns including “2010’s Dancing With Our Local Stars” to 2011’s “Anoka County’s Got Talent” which combined, raised over $30,000 for Lee Carlson Center to this year’s “5th Annual RoofRaiser” where she helped Mayor Scott Lund raise more than $6,000 for Team Fridley. Mandy also collaborated with Lee Carlson Center to award dance scholarships to youth in school-based Peer Support Groups, led by Therapists from Lee Carlson Center.

Beyond her talent for recruitment and fundraising, she’s used her skill as a licensed Esthetician and Cosmetologist to provide hair and make-up services for our events.  Now that’s what you call a full scope of service to our agency!”

“Lee Carlson Center has had a long-standing relationship with YIPA, says Kathy Samilo, LCC Executive Director. For over 30 years, YIPA has helped fund the Peer Support Groups we provide to more than 300 at-risk youth in elementary, middle and high schools in four school districts. This program  works with youth who are beginning to engage in behaviors that are of concern to parents and teachers. Behaviors range from depression to truancy to cutting to experimenting with alcohol and other substances.”

Led by trained therapists from Lee Carlson Center, peer support group sessions help students develop healthier personal interactions and gain an improved sense of self-esteem.  The groups are offered free of charge to families. Most of the students are referred by the principal, teachers or a counselor and many would never receive the help they so desperately need without the convenience of having these services offered at school.

The program also provides referrals to other community resources when the needs of the student are beyond what can be addressed onsite during the school day.  LCC School-based facilitators also meet on a one to one basis as needed and work the students’ teachers to create a supportive classroom environment.

Aggressive Hydraulics Ground Breaking Ceremony
Aggressive Hydraulics, a hydraulics manufacturer and rebuild company, conducted a ground breaking ceremony for their new facility in East Bethel, MN on October 8, 2012. The new facility will be located in a 60,000 SF building and in the area served by East Bethel's new water and sewer project. Currently the company has 45 employees with this number expected to increase to 75. Aggressive Hydraulics was recently recognized as one of the top emerging businesses in the state by Minnesota Business Magazine.

Aggressive Hydraulics is a fast-growing company, targeting both global markets and those with roots in the area.  This is precisely the type of project for which East Bethel is now suited. This project builds on the City's recently completed economic development plan that is designed to stimulate job growth and increase investment in the City.

The City of East Bethel is pleased that Aggressive Hydraulics has selected this site for their relocation.  Aggressive Hydraulics recognized the competitive advantages that East Bethel can offer a company, including 4-lane highway access, available sites, utility infrastructure, a pro-business community environment and a strategic location in the metropolitan Minneapolis-St.Paul market. The City provided planning for utilities connections and liaison services, streamlined the permit process and created a TIF District to provide a source of gap financing for the project.

The City and Aggressive Hydraulics have worked hand in hand during every phase of this project. Paul Johnson of Aggressive Hydraulics stated that "the City of East Bethel has worked with us each step of the way, and has made us feel welcome in the community."

County Attorney Motivated to Share More Talents with Local Mental Health Center

Anoka County Attorney Tony Palumbo is a man of many talents. Last year, he took top honors for his saucy Rumba at Lee Carlson Center’s fundraiser, “Anoka County’s Got Talent.”

This year, he’ll demonstrate he knows his way around a kitchen by cooking an Italian meal with the members of Bridgeview, a Spring Lake Park drop-in center for adults living with serious and persistent mental illness.

Palumbo was motivated to get more involved with Bridgeview members after attending their breakfast fundraiser last year. He was inspired by performer and mental health advocate, Diedrich Weiss. Talking about his struggles with mental illness, Diedrich said “Sometimes you just want to feel normal.”

“A year later that comment has stayed with me” said Palumbo. “May is Mental Health Month and I can’t think of a better way to share my love for cooking than to teach Bridgeview members how to chop, sauté and prepare a fabulous Italian dinner."

This is a special dinner just for Bridgeview members, but Palumbo is extending his offer to help Bridgeview by once again attending this year’s Bridgeview Breakfast, where he’ll also emcee.

The breakfast fundraiser is open to the public and is slated for Thursday, June 14th from 7:30-9 am at Murzyn Hall in Columbia Heights...read more.
