Internship at MetroNorth Chamber will assess transportation systems
David Wentzel selected as recipient of David C. Olson scholarship

ST. PAUL, MN (1/6/20) – David Wentzel, an MBA student at Minnesota State University, Mankato, was selected as the 2019 recipient of the endowed annual scholarship to honor the late David C. Olson. The scholarship will provide Wentzel an internship with the MetroNorth Chamber of Commerce.

Olson, who earned a master’s degree at Minnesota State Mankato, served for more than 23 years as president of the Minnesota Chamber and for six years on Minnesota State’s board of trustees, serving as board chair from 2007-10. The scholarship was created by Minnesota State University, Mankato’s College of Business, in partnership with Olson’s family, friends, business associates and the Minnesota Chamber. The first scholarship was awarded in 2016.
“Hardly a day goes by that we don’t think or say, we need more business leaders active in Minnesota public affairs,” said Doug Loon, Minnesota Chamber president. “The annual Olson scholarship underscores our commitment toward supplying these leaders.”
Wentzel is owner/strategist of Strategies Simplified and a first sergeant in the National Guard. In addition to being an MBA student at Mankato’s College of Business, he has a master’s degree in strategic communication from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor’s degree in social work from Minnesota State Mankato.
He will assist the MetroNorth Chamber in assessing Anoka County transportation systems. Wentzel will identify key issues, research trends and other comparable regions, as well as identify and interview key stakeholders including elected officials and business leaders.
“This project will take our economic development efforts to the next level, truly positioning the MetroNorth Chamber as the leader of our region,” said Lori Higgins, president of the MetroNorth Chamber. “It is an honor to continue the legacy of David Olson.”
The Minnesota Chamber is a statewide organization representing more than 6,000 businesses of all types and sizes – and more than half a million employees – throughout Minnesota. The Chamber works tirelessly for its members; providing one-on-one business services, opportunities to grow their networks and knowledge base, and cultivating an economic environment where businesses stay and grow in our state. A business climate that allows for innovation and forward-thinking leadership will help grow the strength of Minnesota’s economy for generations to come.
