    Description

    Under the supervision and direction of the Public Works Department Supervisors, these seasonal positions perform various types of manual labor in the general maintenance of their department for a period of up to 67 working days.  Hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm.  No weekends, nights or holidays.

    Examples of Duties

    PARKS - ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Performs park maintenance, mows and trims lawn, ball fields, playgrounds, etc.

    • Performs landscape maintenance duties, prunes trees and shrubs, installs mulch, waters, etc.
    • Performs janitorial duties in park buildings which includes vacuuming, mopping floors, cleaning of restrooms, etc.
    • Trash collection throughout the park system.
    • Performs various painting tasks on park facilities.
    • Performs athletic field maintenance including laying out fields, dragging fields, painting field markings, installing bases, etc.
    • Performs specific gardening functions on City-owned landscaped areas throughout the City, including planting, weeding, mulching beds, pruning shrubs and trees, and watering plants.

     STREETS - ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Performs pothole-patching duties throughout the City.
    • Performs boulevard mowing throughout the City.
    • Performs boulevard repairs (sod/black dirt and seed) or boulevard tree trimming.
    • Performs routine refuse removal from boulevard and road ditches.
    • Assists on asphalt overlay projects, involving traffic control, shoveling asphalt, operating roller, or other duties as assigned.

    WATER - ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Performs routine hydrant maintenance, repair and exercising, including painting and lubrication of parts.
    • Performs various cleaning and/or painting duties in and around well houses and water plants.
    • Assists with gate valve exercising and repair.
    • Performs routine lawn and landscaping duties around pump houses and water plants.

     SEWER / STORM - ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

    • Assists with jetting and cleaning of storm sewer and sanitary sewer pipe.
    • Performs repair and maintenance of catch basins, manholes, lift stations, sidewalks and curb and gutter
    • Performs tree and brush removal.
    • Assists with removal of sand and sediment from storm water infrastructure.

     MECHANICS - ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Performs routine custodial duties throughout the Public Works maintenance shops, including floor care and normal house-cleaning duties.
    • Performs painting duties in and around the Public Works buildings.
    • Assists in certain auto or machine maintenance, including sharpening mower blades, changing oil, greasing equipment, etc.
    • Performs parts-running errands.
    • Performs vehicle-cleaning activities.

     OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned or apparent that could include work in any of the other divisions of the Public Works Department.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of operation of lawn care equipment.
    • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
    • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with City staff and the public.
    • Ability to operate equipment in a safe manner.  

     MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • Must be 17 years of age.
    • Must possess a valid Minnesota driver's license with a good driving record.
    • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
